Vancouver Pride Continues

In Men's Sexuality, Sexy in Vancity Radio, Uncategorized, Women's Sexuality on August 6, 2010 at 2:36 pm

I had so much fun celebrating VanPride2010 last Sunday. I was thrilled to check out Raul Pacheco-Vega’s photo stream on flickr. He captures tons of pictures of the CITR Crew broadcasting live. My favourite of course is the photo he took of the two of us.

Smiling pretty with the handsome, Mr. Raul Pacheco-Vega. Multi-talented Raul posed and took this picture.

Although the parade is over, pride continues on. It is a great opportunity to cuddle up, nibble on popcorn and check out some great movies at the  Vancouver Queer Film Festival

I was thrilled to discover the Sexy in Vancity podcast with the unstopable Conni Smudge is yours to download. Although Conni and I didn’t get to swap microphones as she emceed the parade for the 3rd year in a row and I broadcasted from the parade.

Revirginization

In Men's Sexuality, Relationships, Sexy in Vancity Radio, Women's Sexuality, Womens Health on July 22, 2010 at 12:42 pm

Several decades ago, Madonna coined the phrase Like a Virgin.  Five years ago, doctors in LA took that literally.  Women started booking appointment for hymenoplasty. According to Dr. Faizal H Sahukhan, PHD women started getting the operation as a gift to their husbands. In South Asian cultures this surgery is performed for different reasons.

In the western world, many men value experience. In South Asian cultures, there is a high value placed on virginity. In the case of arranged marriage, famillies will go through great lengths to recreate virginity before that marriage takes place. A few weeks ago, the Province ran a story letting Vancouverites know this is happening in our  home town.

You can download the podcast for last night’s in depth discussion about Revirginalization right here.

Venus on Fire Mars on Ice

In Men's Health, Men's Sexuality, Relationships, Sexy in Vancity Radio, Women's Sexuality, Womens Health on June 3, 2010 at 10:55 am

All I can say is wow! Last night Dr. John Gray who coined the phrase “Men are From Mars, Women are From Venus” and wrote the international best-selling book all about it talked about the differences between men and women and his new book, Venus on Fire Mars on Ice.  We talked about how our fast food culture has spiked our stress levels and how this affects our relationships and our health.

With sincerity and humour, Gray talks about how men and women can balance their hormones. Hormonal balance – the key to life, love and energy.

On a personal note, I told him when I watched Sex in the City 2 on Monday night with my gal pals, I couldn’t stop thinking about his book and just how accurate he was. In Sex and the City 2, Big gets Carrie a big, flat screen TV for their 2nd anniversary. Carrie asks one of the frequently asked questions,” Why do men need to watch TV?”

In Gray’s book, he explains that watching TV helps men relax their muscles and replenish their testosterone levels. There are several studies that support men’s need to unwind in front of the flat screen.  Perhaps TV is the modern-day man’s version of bat cave time. Maybe if women can understand that this is a benefit to men’s health, maybe we can stop judging their need for TV. By not taking it personally when he wants to watch TV, we can honour ourselves and our men.

In the same token, research shows that shopping is one of the ways women can restore their oxytocin levels. If men and women are able to recognize our differences and try not to make men women or turn women into men, our relationships can give us more fulfillment. Of course it starts with taking care of ourselves.

Yoga, eating super foods and developing strong communication skills are ways we can not only survive but flourish with life, love and energy. Gray’s Venus on Fire Mars on Ice has a list of super foods that can benefit us. On the show he mentioned many health food stores in Canada carry Venus Calm to benefit women and for men Mars Revived.

Men’s Sexual Health with Maureen McGrath, RN, SHE

In Men's Health, Men's Sexuality, Sexy in Vancity Radio on May 27, 2010 at 10:07 am

Our society puts a great deal of pressure on men in terms of sexuality. Although we’ve gone through the sexual revolution, many girls are still raised to believe that males are sexually obsessed and it is our responsibility to just say,”No!”

When men experience erectile dysfunction, it can raise havoc with their self-esteem and their romantic relationships. Even though we have evolved from the cave man era where men would grab the person they wanted, throw her over his shoulder and drag her back to his cave for his sexual needs, many men still believe that it is their responsibility to always be sexually engaged and ready for action.

Last night’s episode of Sexy in Vancity Radio, Maureen McGrath diffused many of the myths about erectile dysfunction. With warmth and empathy she enlightened listeners about some of the potential health concerns that erectile dysfunction might be pointing to.

Other topics we touched on were male postpartum depression which can affect 1-25% of new fathers; the male HPV vaccine, and some of the resources that are available to men.

Hot Rods N’Hot Bods

In Men's Health, Men's Sexuality on May 25, 2010 at 3:26 pm
If you are planning on being in Victoria on June 13th, mark your calendar to check out Hot Rods N’Hot Bods.  This is a new twist on Dancers for Cancer. Annie Temple appeared on Sexy in Vancity Radio on 101.9FM CITR (download podcast here)  promoting Dancers for Cancer event in Vancouver.
Here are the details compliments of Eve Pandora.
VICTORIA, BC: The Fox Showroom Pub will host Hot Rods N’ Hot Bods on June 13 from noon till 1:00 a.m., adding a new twist to its annual Dancers for Cancer event by featuring a classic car and motorcycle rally in the parking lot.

Proceeds will be divided between two local causes: The Prostate Center and Rose, a Victoria single mother who survived acute mylogeneous leukemia (AML) and is struggling to raise her three boys while dealing with the complications of her life-saving treatments.

Rose, 33 at her diagnosis, received a stem cell transplant from her brother July 6th, 2006. The transplant worked and the cancer is gone but she lives with a long list of complications, disability, and chronic illness due to graft vs host disease where the donated bone marrow or stem cells view her body as foreign and attack it.

“The medications have made me ill, rendered me very frail and disabled. I couldn’t take care of myself much less the boys, so they took care of me,” says Rose. “I want nothing more than to give them the normal things kids their age have.”

Despite her physical and financial difficulties Rose is an inspiration to many.

“I write a blog to give people hope, make them laugh, inspire them to keep their spirits up, and assure them that they are not alone,” says Rose. She was also requested on the Stupid Cancer Show twice.

The fundraiser will feature exotic entertainers, burlesque performers, former exotic dancers, pole dancers, first timers and even a belly dancing hoola hooper. The car rally goes from 2 p.m. till 5:30 p.m. with a $20 entrance free for vehicle participants. Spectator admission is by donation. Gift donations for Rose’s children are also sincerely appreciated.

The Fox Pub was voted Favourite Strip Club – Entertainer’s Choice and long-time manager and DJ, Loran, was also honoured as Favourite DJ in NakedTruth.ca’s 2009 Adult Entertainment Awards. Founder of NakedTruth.ca, Annie Temple, started the Dancers for Cancer event seven years ago when an industry member succumbed to terminal cancer.

Venus on Fire, Mars on Ice

In Events, Men's Health, Men's Sexuality, Relationships, Women's Sexuality, Womens Health on May 13, 2010 at 9:17 pm

On June 2nd, I get to chat to Dr. John Grey on Sexy in Vancity Radio on CITR 101.9FM  about  his new book Venus on Fire, Mars on Ice. If you want to meet him in person, he will be in Vancouver doing a book signing at Chapters on Robson Street from 4-5pm on Friday, May 14, 2010.

Dr. John Gray will be signing copies of his new book on Chapters on Robson Street on Friday, May 14th from 4-5pm

Here are some exerpts from the press release:

Venus on Fire, Mars on Ice: Achieving Hormonal Harmony is Key to Happiness

Recent scientific discoveries have proven that the difference between the sexes and how they relate to one another are biochemically based and can be explained by our hormones. “These hormonal differences don’t just determine whether we like to shop or fix things; they reveal the unique ways that each gender deals with stress,” explains bestselling relationship author John Gray. In his new book, Venus on Fire, Mars on Ice, Gray, well-known for his international bestseller Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus, delves into providing a plan to ensure ample production of the hormones that our bodies need both mentally and physically.

The Hormones of Fire and Ice: Oxytocin and Testosterone

“Women and men aren’t different because they grew up differently or came to look at the world in differing ways, though both can be true,” explains Gray. “It’s because the bodies of men and women are hormonally poles apart. The biochemical makeup of the two genders is not the same.” We have known this, in broad terms, for a long time. But it’s only recently that we’ve gained the scientific knowledge to pinpoint which hormones are most influential in the success and failure of relationships.

“For a man, increased levels of testosterone reduce stress,” explains Gray. “For a woman, increased levels of oxytocin reduce stress.” Gray emphasizes it’s important to understand that both genders do make use of both testosterone and oxytocin, but, both men and women differ greatly on how much of each hormone they need.

Testosterone: Men Must Make 30 Times More than Women to Cope with Stress

Without testosterone, a man’s stress level rises quickly. “When a man’s hormonal testosterone level goes up, his stress level comes down. That’s not true for women.” Too much testosterone can cause aggression and impulsivity and can actually raise a woman’s level of stress. To cope with stress, a man is drawn to situations that either release testosterone or rebuild testosterone, which is why men enjoy fixing the toaster or changing the oil. “As he acts, a man feels competent and powerful, “says Gray. “But soon thereafter he needs to kick back and recover, because resting or taking time for recreation gives him a chance to rebuild his stores of testosterone.”

Oxytocin: Women Deplete Their Supply Faster than Men

To cope effectively with stress, women are more drawn to situations that stimulate the release of oxytocin and facilitate the rebuilding of oxytocin. “By sharing herself in nurturing situations, oxytocin is released and her stress levels decline,” explains Gray. “By receiving nurturing support, she is able to rebuild her oxytocin levels.” Availing themselves of opportunities to rebuild oxytocin levels by receiving nurturing support is the greatest unmet challenge of women today. Finding time to receive nurturing is often the last thing a woman is willing to do when she’s under stress.

Good News: We Can Change the Way Stress Effects Our Bodies

“Anyone who has ever been in love knows that when you’re sharing love, feeling loved or giving love, you feel wonderful, “ says Gray. “This feeling of wonderful is actually the release of stress, and the dissipation of cortisol levels.” Cortisol, a hormone released by our adrenal glands in times of stress, is the culprit that shuts down the production of the other hormones our bodies need. Under stress and high levels of cortisol, the body stops making feel-good hormones that keep us healthy and happy. Often cortisol levels remain higher than need be because we don’t use it up by physically running away, etc. “Clearly, what we must do is to fix the adrenal switch so that we produce only the cortisol we need, when we need it,” explains Gray.

Nutrition for Healthy Hormones: Steady Blood Sugar and Superfoods

“We must fuel our bodies with the nutrients that are so essential to providing the physical foundation for our brains,” explains Gray. Steady blood sugar prevents spikes in cortisol, the stress hormone, thus preventing adrenal burnout and promoting the production of healthy hormones. Healthy blood sugar levels also provide fuel to make feel-good brain chemicals, such as dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins.

Superfoods are those that have been used by different cultures for thousands of years and are known for their extra nutritional benefits. They are super rich in amino acids, good fats, vitamins, minerals and medicinal phytochemicals. Some superfoods include:

• Maca powder: derived from a root that grows in Peru at some of the highest altitudes on the planet. Maca is known to lower stress levels and increase the production of hormones. Maca can help stop hot flashes in women and increase libido in men.

• Goji berries: most commonly grow in Tibet and Mongolia. Research in China has shown that these berries help stabilize blood sugar.

• Cacao nibs: pure source of chocolate. Rich in magnesium and are an excellent source of iron. Known to uplift mood and feelings of love and happiness. Like goji berries, a super-concentrated source of antioxidants.

• Açai berries: from Brazil, where they are known to raise the metabolism to increase energy levels without the side effects of caffeine. While caffeine increases stress levels, açai berries lower them.

• Molasses: contains all the minerals that are stripped away from processed refined sugars. Only a small amount is needed.

• Coconut Oil: stimulates the body to burn more fat. Helps body shift from the emergency state of sugar burning to the relaxed and longer lasting energy state of fat burning.

TCM in Today

In Men's Health, Men's Sexuality, Women's Sexuality, Womens Health on April 30, 2010 at 11:37 pm

Episode 4  focuses on finding wellness in our sexuality and relationships in todays fast food culture. As health concerns such as impotence, prostate health and women’s sexual health issues no longer front page but mainstream media, perhaps examing different ways to embrace wellness into our lives might be beneficial for all of us.

Special guest, Kevin Scrimgeour & I will discuss the Books focused on the early ideas relating to the tao of sex and TCM books about sex, basic techniques to enhance sexual energy and taoist tantric sex practice. TCM benefits the whole person spiritually, emotionally and physically. By engaging in practices that benefit one’s well being, this practice will also benefit one’s sexual and relational aspects.

Other tangents include discussion regarding the difference between modern trends in sex and ancient ideas of sex as a way to intimacy and ultimately to spiritual enlightenment if not abundant health.
