Live A Life You Love

In empowerment, Relationships, Sexy in Vancity Radio on June 10, 2010 at 11:11 am

Dr. Susan Biali joined me for last night’s edition of Sexy in Vancity Radio to chat about her book Live A Life You Love. Some of the key points that came up during the interview were:

Make sure your life plan you are following is actually your plan not what other people want for you.

Giving yourself permission to play.

Dating in Vancouver.

Finding your passion for your life and opening yourself up to the possibility of adding a romantic partner to that mix.

How to keep love growing during long term relationships. Avoiding the 7 year itch.

Giving yourself and your partner permission and support  to evolve into the gorgeous and wonderful human being that they are.

Letting that person continue to be the person you fell in love with. Not taking someone for granted.

Roles of men and women in relationships.

Taking note what we can learn from how  other cultures celebrate what makes women women and honoring what makes men men.

Home work – Working through the work books for Live A Life You Love with Your partner.

What we should teach our children to empower them as they grow into adults.

Give permission to explore what your “north star” is.

And much more. You can listen to the podcast right here.

Many of us live in the 9 to 5 world. We spend 8 hours a day doing work that is not fulfilling. We keep checking the clock to see how much longer we have to wait until the day ends. When we come home we are exhausted. We might plunk ourselves down in front of the computer for another four hours of chatting online. The thought of  having to do it all over again tomorrow might make one feel like not getting out of bed. If many of us in Vancouver chose to live this life, is it any wonder why the most common complaint about Vancouverites is “there is no one to date.”

Dating starts with self discovery. If you don’t know who you are and spend your days doing things that don’t make you happy, you might choose to date for the wrong reasons. It makes us feel alive when we are in lust or in love. Perhaps that sense of vitality should start with taking a good look in the mirror and seeing who looks back at you.

Dr. Susan Biali chats about how to Live a Life You Love - including time for romantic partners and yourself on tonight's edition of Sexy in Vancity Radio on 101.9FM CITR

Keeping balance in mind, what do we need to do to live a life we love?

Dr. Susan Biali will be chatting to Sexy in Vancity listeners about living a life they love and finding time to balance a healthy relationship this Wednesday at 10pm on 101.9FM CITR

Last weekend Dr. Susan Biali inspired the audience at the WOW (www.thewowevent.com) last weekend. Flamenco music silenced the room full of 700 women and drew them to look at the beautiful dark haired woman dancing towards the front of the room.

Dr. Susan Biali knows how to make an entrance. She stood in front of the microphone as the music faded. The audience listened to her inspirational story of how life can give you what you want. We just need to be ready to listen for the clues.

    Mysterious Woman

In empowerment, Relationships on June 4, 2010 at 9:32 am

Sometimes it is nice to step into someone else’s shoes. When we attempt to walk in Miu Miu stilettos, our shoulders blades slide into place, breasts perk up, and our backs arch back. Our calves muscles morph into tightened and lengthened curves. Its completely different when slipping into your best friends sneakers. With the Nike Air cushioning, we  bounce like cheerleaders before we drink our morning Starbucks. Sometimes the act of slipping on someone else’s shoes means we create a completely different persona.

This afternoon, I read one of my twitter friend’s stories. In the story, she talked about how we create different personas when we go out. Boy meets girl. Girl chose not to tell him her real name or what she did for a living. Instead of being evasive, she lied. In a small town like Vancity, it was plausible that he could walk  into the bar where she works.  Surprised then outraged, he proceeded to spend the next five hours blabbing his “poor me” story to her coworkers.

Her tale did not mention if she called the police.  She could have.  Harassment is not particularly sexy. Yes she lied to him. She did not deserve to be punished in that manner. If she had picked up the “freak” feeling when she met him the previous evening, I can understand why she wouldn’t want to reveal anything about herself.

All of us meet people we find attractive. All of us meet people who find us attractive. Sometimes the attraction is not reciprocated.  Sometimes we lie about who we are and how we feel about someone because we do not want to hurt the other person. A lie may buy us time to escape. If the lie is discovered by the person who believed it to be true, ego and feelings might be bruised. If there is someone we meet that we are not interested in, it is better to be up front about it. There is no point wasting his time or yours. You are too wonderful to waste your time pretending to be something that you are not.  To quote Aretha Franklin is it all about Respect.

That being said, there is no reason why you can’t explore the possibility of seeing who you want to be. Perhaps a different stage might be used to explore those options.

    WOW!

Thursday’s (or Wednesday’s Midnight showing) Release of Sex in the City 2 evoked a craving within me. For the past five weeks, I have counted down the days.  I realized I wasn’t looking for an excuse to peruse my shoe closet to see which pair of stiletos I wanted to cramp my feet into.  Nor was I contemplating which bar served the best Cosmopolitans in Vancouver.  I am craving quality girl time.

Quality women bonding time that does not need to be a guilty pleasure, just pure pleasure.

There is part of me that craves quality over glitz. As much as I enjoy (and believe me I enjoy every drop of guilty pleasure from gossip sessions with my gal pals) spending girl time with my friends, I am looking for something with a bit more substance.

Tomorrow promises to satiate that craving.  I am heading to the WOW event at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver.  According to the press release, it promises:

     World-class speakers and entertainment
~  Over $10,000 in fantastic door prizes
    ~  Meaningful and impactful connections
~  Gifts, food, fun, retail therapy and …
    ~  TWO chocolate fountains

By listening to the interview with WOW founder, Christine Awrum, I think I will be leaving with an abundance of inspiration and thrilled to be a woman. You can download the podcast here.

Dating in Vancouver: Date Concept 1

In empowerment, Events on May 28, 2010 at 11:53 am

Many people still think of Vancouver as a “no fun city”. This can make things challenging for coming up with creative date ideas.  Some of the best ideas are kept on the down low. Thankfully  facebook, twitter and other social media platforms make the  search for something to do easy. This morning I got an email that included the jpeg for the Art & Power event held at Radha Eatery on June 1st from 8 -11pm. With a smile on my face, I envisioned a rose held between beau’s teeth before he slid the lush red petals  into my dark locks behind my ear. Not that it is hard for me to think of romantic ideas when it comes to my companion and I but when it comes to flamenco…

There’s something sexy about flamenco dancing & art. When you can fuse them together to do good, it makes the experience sweeter. On Tuesday, June 1st, doll up and slide over to Radha Eatery to catch Art & Power.  While you are being entertained and can choose from Radha’s fantastic menu, you are doing the world a great deal of good.

During the evening, you will get a chance to see the art created by the women who attend Attira’s Enterprising Women Making Art program.  The program encourages women to sell their art and handmade products as an act of personal, community and economic empowerment. It’s a great opportunity to see some great pieces and support women who may have experienced violence in their lives.

As I perused Radha’s website, my excitement grew.  Radha offers cooking classes on Sunday afternoons. Their award-winning meals are affordable and perhaps attending a cooking class with my guy might be a great Sunday afternoon date idea.

Many a winter night I’ve spent in our cramped kitchen stirring a red sauce. Together we seem to enjoy our legs entangling as we dip the spoon inside the pot before sampling the sauce. We grab jars of spices and chat about how we spent the hours apart  as we sprinkle oregano and fresh basil.

The concept of stretching our cooking skills to creating vegetarian meals appeals to me. I am not sure what the classes will be like but I promise to keep you posted.

With bikini season coming up, perhaps I will check out their yoga classes too!

    Shoegasm!

Women who are not afraid to walk with confidence and grace are some of the sexiest women in the world.  Vancouverites have a reputation of  being “beautiful people.” Our healthy West Coast lifestyle might give the illusion that we are laid back and fashion backwards. In the land of Lululemon, one could say that our West Coast women chose comfort over style. The  Fox, Fluvog and Friends exhibition at the Museum of Vancouver blows that myth away.  Until September 26th,   fashionistas can explore the collection of over 150 shoes before swinging by Fifth Avenue Cinemas to catch Sex in the City 2 or sign up for a guided tour. One never knows who they might meet as one struts through the Museum of Vancouver.

    Strut in Your stilettos

In anticipation of  the opening of Sex in the City 2, women want to know  how to walk in stilettos.  “Just put your weight in heels,” I advise, “Or take a workshop with Taaja Kayler.”  Beautiful Taaja Kayler teaches women “the walk, the look and how to own the room.” As we slid our feet into our favourite Miu Mius (Sex in the City 2′s Carrie Bradshaw’s shoe of choice),  it is important to know how to walk with poise and confidence.  Although we might fall into the lap of a potential Prince Charming if we continue to trip and fall over our feet, I think that special somebody might notice you if you are not afraid to own your space.

A few weeks ago, Taaja taught a red carpet walk workshop at Beauty Night Society. Beauty Night provides marginalized women and youth tools to make positive lifestyle choices.  Women who live in poverty came in, arms wrapped around their chests, hunched over. It seemed like they were trying to wrap themselves tightly into a tiny ball. Gently Taaja coaxed the reluctant women who said they “just want to watch” into strolling with pride down the red carpet. Shoulders back, torso pulled out of the hips, the participants stopped keeping their gaze glued to the floor and began to gaze at life directly as they walked with confidence and ease.  Like the folded petals of a bud, they flourished as they opened up and bloomed.

As I watched the women walk, I wished that we could teach walking and self-esteem workshops for children. Perhaps if we are able to empower our youth, they can choose their  stilettos and walk down their chosen path of life with confidence and pride.

    Pole Dancing Queen

In empowerment, Events, Women's Sexuality, Womens Health on May 13, 2010 at 5:11 pm

53 women signed up for my pole dancing for fitness class! With excitement and fear coursing through my veins, I wonder how I am going to get 53 women up on one pole in a 45 minute class! I am teaching a fusion of cardio strip tease and pole dancing for the Every Woman in the World event at Whistler this weekend.

I like creating safe spaces for women to play, get a fantastic workout and feel happy and healthy! I am looking forward to taking a variety of different classes this weekend. Usually I leave Every WOMAN inspired. As an instructor I learn a great deal from taking other people’s classes.  I learn different ways of explaining similar exercises, exploring different types of fitness and having the opportunity to be led by some fantastic women. Over the years, I have met many fantastic women at Every WOMAN.

Who knows what this weekend will bring. I have packed the pole, some music, and a sexy dress for a date night out…  I think I am set for a fabulous weekend!

I have met women who inspire me. Women who I inspire.
